Paper Receipts

Trash Container

Most register receipts today are made from thermal paper, which contains BPA.  They are also small which are likely to slip through recycling sorting equipment.

REDUCE:  Refuse a receipt before it is generated or go with an e-receipt.

Other tips: Always remember to remove receipts out of bags when dropping off plastic bags and other film wrap products for recycling.

Do Not Recycle

Most receipts are made from a combination of plastic and paper, and they also contain a harmful chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA). Since the materials cannot be separated and BPA cannot be removed from the paper, receipts are not recyclable.

Do Not Burn

Avoid using receipts to light fires. Burning receipts releases toxic chemicals onto the air that are harmful to inhale.
